This track is an easy day walk, and a good choice for a quick winter overnighter.
Look for the car park on the right, near the eastern end of Peak Hill. From here, a poled route leads across private farmland onto the hill, climbing through matagouri and celmisia scrub to the ridge. From here, the route turns left and climbs easily along the ridge, ariving at the summit after 2 hours.
From the summit are spectacular views in all directions. Lake Coleridge dominates the view, but several wide river valleys offer expansive views: the Wilberforce River leads northward to edge around the western side of Arthur's Pass National Park, the Mathias and Rakaia Rivers lead westward into the Southern Alps, the Rakaia River leads out across the Canterbury Plains to the ocean beyond.
