This short walk starts at Big River, a ghost town tucked in the Victoria Forest Park ranges. First, you need to walk to Big River, by one of several routes.
From the hut, follow the wide track out to Waiuta. Past a small ford, a little track is marked dropping down to the river. Forest soon gives way to tussock flats. Follow the marker poles, fording the river, and continuing in and out of forest. Eventually, the track leads to a rocky corner where two streams meet. The old wooden dam is located here.
