Hurunui Hut
Lake Sumner Conservation Park
Large tramping hut on river terrace above the Hurunui valley. The hut is near the roadend, and as such convenient for those arriving in the evening for an early morning start. The pack-horse track from the roadend is well marked and easy to follow at night.
Note that the nearby No. 2 Hut no longer exists
The track over Harper Pass to Otira on the Arthur's Pass road is well maintained on the Lake Sumner side of the pass, with many huts along the way: No. 3 hut, Camerons Hut (basic), Harper Biv (basic), No. 4 Hut (the 1st hut in the Taramakau). Beyond No. 4 hut the pack-horse track becomes a valley-floor route, with several river crossings which are difficult after rain. Kiwi Hut lies half-way between No. 4 Hut and Otira, but is on the opposite side of the Taramakau river to the route, and not accessible after high rainfall.
