Pigeon Island / Wāwāhi Waka, along with nearby Pig Island / Mātau and diminutive Tree Island are glacier-sculpted islands in Lake Wakatipu.
The islands are managed as a reserve by the Queenstown Lakes District Council. They are being revegetated, and are home to buff weka reintroduced from the Chatham Islands.
From the jetty and nearby Smithy's Hut, a track leave over to North Bay. The North End Loop Track continues right up to the end of the island, and returns along the soft ridge. A side track leads to the low summit (463m). The track loops back to the hut.
